Next time, I am going to take the book apart and replace the paper.

It's funny to see this so big on here, because the original drawing is only 5 x 7.

Two more pages completed in a two-page spread. This is another for the Virtual Paintout. Aspen, Colorado. I scanned the pages separately and didn't get the register quite right in the image. Sorry. It doesn't look like that in the book (in the center.)

Problem is, I MISSED--Aspen is in Pitkin County, not Summit County. :-( I MESSED UP YET AGAIN.

I used to publish things to only one blog, that is, if it was on one blog, I didn't put it on another. The blogs had different purposes. But now I ahve different readers on each blog, so in some instances, I'm repeating myself. :-( Sorry, if you happen to be one of the few who visits several blogs.

Attending a Virtual Paintout, Eureka, California

My friend Gail Slaughter who lives near Eureka California sent me a newspaper clipping about the Virtual Paintout. I decided to try submitting, and this is the first painting I did:

The instructions said to go to google maps and using the streetview, choose a view. I had never done that before, and I thought I'd done it but it turned out to be a photo--I didn't realize it, being unfamiliar with the google maps and streetviews, until it was too late. So I can't submit it.

So I did another one:

Unfortunately, being the end of the year and the end of the month, both of these were done more hastily than I would prefer to do them. But we are out of town visiting and I have limited art supplies and limited time.

I'm fairly happy with the painting which is gouache on blue paper. I'm NOT happy with the paper, which turns out to be too thin and fragile or with the scanner which did really bad job making this look right--the paint is very reflective to the scanner light--it looks much better in natural light.

Bird of Paradise Flower #2 (Experimenting)

Bird of Paradise Flower #2 (Experimenting). This is an experiment--I sprayed flat black acrylic paint on the paper of a 5 x 8 Moleskine, opened up to 8 x 10 size (2-page spread) and painted the same bird of paradise flower that I did earlier with pigment markers. It is done in gouache, and I'd say it's a failed experiment, but interesting anyway.

The gouache did NOT work well on this paper. It looks more like acrylic, but doesn't cover as well. Because of the reflective nature of the scanner, it looks MUCH brighter than it actually does in the mole itself.

I made the pigment-marker sketch last night and then digitally altered it on photoshop to make a valentine. It's all pigment markers except the skin, as I have no skin-colored pigment markers.

More with the pigment markers! I need to read up on them, I have some questions. But anyway, another attempt for Hennie's pocket. (The original) Done on watercolor paper with Faber Castell indian ink pigment markers.

Hennie may end up with a fuller pocket than anyone else because of the holiday delays.

I had to clear the dining room table for company the other day and lost my painter's masking tape and now I keep goofing the edges of my work. Can you imagine anyone thinking that a table was for eating on--a table is for art, right?

I never used any kind of markers for art before, and now I am learning the difference between pigment markers and dye markers. Y'all probably already know this. One of the cool things about pigment markers is that you can shade within the same color, it gets darker as you color over it--that has great possibilities for hair and fur and shadow texture etc, but on the other hand, it is difficult (for me, so far) to make large smooth areas with pigment markers.

This drawing is done exclusively with pigment markers that I got for Christmas. There are four colors plus the white of the paper. The man, as y'all know, is my husband. I tried "cover stock," but I like water color paper better! The picture is 8.5 x 11, but I will have to trim it a little to get it into the pocket.

It's another experiment. I learn something from every experiment.

(There's a bit of a story--she's riding in the Tour de France and quite a character with all her scarves! Someone's trying to get her attention by offering a beer, but she's having none of it--pedaling furiously, and looks into the "camera" (or the artist's eye) for just a moment before she whirls away out of sight.).

My work on Aya's Mole for the day: "The Black Veil." This is done in watercolors--or, I should say, water color. I only used one color, indigo (I think Windsor Newton, but I'm not sure--I used it off my palette.) It is for Mike Kline to finish. Have fun, Mike--use any media or color you want. I was inspired by a photograph at the DIA, but unfortunately, I didn't get the info, just the idea. I wanted to photograph the photograph and info, but we were not allowed to.

I sketched two pictures lightly in pencil facing each other as close to each other (similar to each other, the "same") as I could, then worked from there on each side.

BW Value Sketch gone colored

I can't stop playing--I made my BW value sketch into a color sketch on Artrage and then into a Thanksgiving card. On the color version on Artrage, I used "markers, paint and chalk." I forgot to mention on the previous post that the original value sketches on Newsprint wouldn't fit on my scanner. That's why my signature and notes are cut off.

I made this tonight, first with gel pens and then colored pencils--using only the basic colors (I had no flesh tones or anything but like basic green, so I tried blending pink orange yellow and brown. Unfortunately, the subtle tones did not scan well, and the ink scanned much darker than the pencil. But oh well, here it is.

I just can't seem to let this one go. I made this version for Jim Doran and printed it for him. If you click on the image, you can see it larger still.

This shows many of the variations I made of this piece of art. he one on the bottom left is a scan of the original color version done on a tiny piece of paper with markers--the paper was an hp printer instruction sheet printed with a daisy over it. One is a pastel version.

This may be my last version of this--I printed out the previous version and colored it with pastels in A4 size (8.5 x 11) and scanned it. The original pictures was 3 x 4 done with markers, so now I have a large "original" (that is, a paper copy which is unique from any of the digital versions. I'm going to give it as a gift.)

The blue here is more saturated than the actual picture, sorry about that. I'm not sure how to fix it--I suppose I could dork with the scan of the print on photoshop but I don't have time for that now.

The text has come out along the side and I do not know how to fix that either I thought if I just kept writing you might see it and look to the side.
